Event description

Description

Meet Nguyen Tran--the unlikely banana suit-wearing, culturally confused Vietnamese-American son of Vietnam War refugees who settled in Dallas, TX. There he worked at a dot.com before the first internet bubble; when it burst, he graduated with a then-useless Computer Science degree, and moved to Hollywood to sell TV re-runs.

Next, he landed at the "king maker" famous--and stressfully infamous--William Morris Agency mailroom. And in the depths of the 2008 fall of the economy, Starry Kitchen, the illegal-and-underground apartment restaurant he and his wife Thi Tran created out of sheer necessity to survive, was born. Although that restaurant was discovered and shut down by the authorities, Nguyen persevered on his path of "failing forwards" and created a few other restaurants, the most recent of which is Button Mash in Echo Park.

With this LA Made program, you should expect the unexpected! With a "Nguyen Tran Variety Hour" flavor, this unique program will include Nguyen's reflections on the wild pendulum of success and failure, audience karaoke, storytelling, a cooking demo, and a free sampling of Starry Kitchen's signature Crispy Tofu Balls for everybody.

Following the program, there will be a booksigning for his cookbook/memoir Adventures in Starry Kitchen: 88 Asian-Inspired Recipes from America’s Most Famous Underground Restaurant.

You won't want to miss this one, trust us!
