Description
IACHR GEIE Nicaragua Report: Violence in Nicaragua, March-April 2018
During March and April of 2018, paramilitary forces organized and led by the Nicaraguan government and the Sandinista National Liberation Front were responsible for 325 deaths and disappearances, hundreds of wounded and the arrest of more than 600 people in Managua and other cities. The massacre, followed by innumerous arbitrary arrests and the persecution of opposition voices — members of civil society and independent journalists— produced massive migration of Nicaraguans to Costa Rica and forced many leaders to go underground or flee the country as political exiles.. The government has turned a deaf ear to the serious claims of violation of human rights made against it and even today rejects those accusations, describing the victims as "terrorists". The report “Acts of Violence in Nicaragua between April 18 and May 30, 2018” was prepared by the International Group of Independent Experts (GIEI), an entity established by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights; release of the report in Nicaragua was banned by the government of Daniel Ortega. The report will be presented at FIU on Thursday, February 7 at 6:30 pm. Organized by the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center and the Seattle International Foundation, this event will offer an in-depth discussion of its content as well as an analysis of the state of affairs in Nicaragua today.
