Description

Day 1

This workshop focuses on short-term play therapy techniques to help children gain mastery and competence to resolve psychological difficulties. Therapists will be trained in the therapeutic powers of play and how child development plays an important role in the play therapy treatment of children. The therapist will learn to take a directive, active, focused stance to bring problems into the open and help guide children in the resolution of these issues. Therapists will learn to formulate a case, develop a contract and select appropriate materials to facilitate this process. A 10 week program will be illustrated. Videotapes enhance the didactic presentation.

Day 2

Cognitive behavioral play therapy incorporates cognitive and behavioral interventions within a play therapy paradigm. It provides a theoretic framework based on cognitive-behavioral principles and integrates these in a developmentally sensitive way. Problem solving approaches are used to help child develop more adaptive thoughts and behaviors. Attention will be given to theory and techniques. Case examples of children from preschool through high school will be discussed. In addition, the prescriptive eclectic model will be explained to match treatment with the individual child, teaching the therapist flexibility in play therapy and adapting treatment to meet the needs of children with different presenting problems. Different theoretical approaches which are empirically proven to assist different children’s psychological problems will be discussed. Videotapes of various techniques to use will be shown to enhance the didactic presentation.

Day 3

Children are usually at risk for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) whenever exposed to traumatic events. The many factors that make them resilient can be regained through the use of Release Play Therapy for Children. This Play Therapy uses the child’s natural methods of dealing with difficulties to help him/her work through and master the traumatic event. Participants will be doing some experiential work during this workshop. The didactic presentation will be enhanced by illustrations of real case videos.
