From The Book GLORY: A Life Among Legends:

"You Gotta Save My Job!"

"When I was chosen to be one of the dancers in the 1961 off-Broadway revival of the musical Show Boat, which was staged at New York City Center, I was delighted with the cast of dancers—Joan Peters, Billy Wilson, Myrna White, Ella Thompson, Bernard Johnson, Nat Horne, Lavinia Hamilton, Julius Fields, Jan Aubrey Mickens, Harold Pierson, Ronald Platts, and Leu Comacho. Dania Krupska was the director, Arthur Partington the choreographer, and Stanley Simmons the costume designer.

We began rehearsals with everyone fired up to do exciting new choreography by Arthur. I was standing in the front of the line when Arthur started talking about his work for the show, then he suddenly broke out into an exceptionally intricate tap combination. I quickly faded to the back of the group and peered around at what he was doing. He was saying, with great enthusiasm: “…and this combination is for Glory and Bernard!”

I couldn’t believe my ears. I couldn’t tap! The only ones who could tap in our group were Joan, Myrna White, Bernard, and Harold. Bernard and Joanie were, indeed, tap wizards!

I grabbed Joanie and hissed at her, “You gotta save my job—you gotta teach me this combination. You can’t go to lunch, I gotta learn this combination!”... Dr. Glory Van Scott
