• Oya Bangura (she/her/hers), West African Dancer and CEO of ProjectMOVE in Bay Shore and Teaching artist at Tilles Center. Appeared at Madison Square Garden’s Felt Forum, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center’s Outdoor Festivals, American Ballet Theatre, New York State Theatre, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Balboa Park (San Diego), NDI’s schools (Maine and New Hampshire), and the Rodotto and Fenice (Venice, Italy). As a member of Tap Kids USA, appeared with the Pointer Sisters, for Polaroid's 50th Anniversary (Boston). Featured performer on 20/20 feature on NDI, promoting The Event of the Year on the Today Show. Danced in Emile Ardolino’s film OFF BEAT. Has performed with Mary Tyler Moore, Ann Reinking, Cloris Leachman, Charlotte d’Amboise, Christopher d’Amboise, Judy Collins, and Savion Glover.

• Anu Annam (they/flexi), is an acclaimed artist, educator, curator, and administrator. In their 30-year artistic practice, they explore psychology through watercolor, acrylic, oil, and collage weaving realistic depictions and abstractions of figures and faces creating an overall image of honest emotion. They are faculty at numerous institutions and have won multiple arts, teaching, and community grants from New York State Council on the Arts, New York Foundation of the Arts, and Suffolk County. Annam is the founder/director of the arts-based support and advocacy organization, SEA of Visibility, which provides robust, multi-disciplinary arts and education programs that center queer/BIPOC folx with invisible disabilities aiding in the integration of the disabled community into the cultural landscape of New York.

FILM DESCRIPTION:

Filmmaker Jeff Feuerzeig chronicles the life of a manic-depressive musician and artist, using a blend of home movies, Johnston's own audiotapes, vintage performances and current footage. Johnston has recorded more than 10 full-length albums and amassed a prolific portfolio of sketches, and has among his supporters Matt Groening, David Bowie, Sonic Youth, Beck, and Tom Waits.

ABOUT EVENT

Daniel Johnston was a musician and visual artist plagued with hallucinations and mood swings that have been called many names, either clinical or disparaging, for too many years. But with the support of his fans, he practiced his art—influencing Nirvana and even having his work exhibited in the Whitney Biennial. His voice was heard, and his art was seen.

SEA of Visibility provides support for fem identifying/nonbinary, queer, immigrant and BIPOC folx so the vast tapestry of marginalized experiences that comprise the mental health and disabled community can express ourselves and find professional and social acceptance as Johnston had in his prolific life.

Kelly Olshan’s piece is the featured exhibition image. It is evocative of the sometimes even irrational hope that we need to LIVE LIFE. As we continue to open up after an unprecedented shutdown, we invite all to come together at the Cinema Arts Centre to see this thoughtful exhibition as well as the film doc, The Devil & Daniel Johnston and concert with Coffee NAP and Greg Baker (formerly of This’ll Kill Ya). We will have an artist panel with a discussion on mental health.

SEA of Visibility is an organization that embraces BIPOC, immigrant, queer and disabled artists and allies, focusing on neurodiversity and mental health. It “Supports Expression through the Arts” (SEA) and promotes destigmatization and integration through multidisciplinary arts exhibitions, performances and art-making programs. It provides peer and professional support and offers coping and compensatory strategies for its participants, helping to create art that broadens the greater community’s vision of what mental illness is.
