Event description

Description

Being hipster is defined as a subculture of young urban middle-class adults and older generations of teenagers who have an infatuation with past trends being re-invented for current times. They began being defined as a group of people in the 1990's but became most prevelant in 2010-today. Their style, philosophy and nature is said to be based on the earlier movements in the 1940s. That being said hipsters have adopted a couple of older trends as their own today such as macrame and kombucha.

Kombucha is a variety of fermented lightly carbonated tea drinks with a large sugar quantity that is known for their supposed health benefits. Kombucha is produced by fermenting a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast. The supposed health benefits of kombucha range from stimulating immune systems, boosting libido, reversing gray hair and even treating human illnesses. However many of these claims have no support while many adverse health effects and even deaths have been documented by the American Cancer Society.

Macrame is the art of knitting string in patterns to make decorative articles. This art has been long used by sailors to decorate parts of ships, bottles and knife handles. Macrame originated in the 13th century by arab weavers that used the art to decorate towels, shawls, and veils. The original word migramah can be translated to "stiped towel", "embroidered veil" or "ornamental fringe"
