KOLOB: The journey of the soul from life, death and beyond through contemporary dance, digital media, and live musical performance.
Jodi Porter presents KOLOB it premiering at 8pm., Thursday, March 2 at the Sharon Disney Lund Theatre at California Institute of the Arts. Porter’s work focuses on the re-emergence of Christian spiritual dance themes in a contemporary theatrical space. The piece investigates her view of the spiritual realm of existence following death through a journey of landscapes and physical experiences evoked by the dancers.
Porter’s cast consists of advanced CalArts dancers including Nuri Baylerian, Jete Dongieux, Matt Kuang, Amelia Laughlin, MarieElena Martingano, Ruchama Son and Angelica Mondol Viana. Other collaborators include musician Kain Summerlin, costume designer Chardonnay Tobar, lighting designer Rose Malone, video designer Kam Ying Lee, and dance film director Heather Rebecca.
Kolob is a destination known as “The first creation, nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God.” Porter strives to create visual realms of existence through a series images, movement and original music that aims to transcend the audience’s awareness from temporal to spiritual.
Porter currently a MFA2 candidate at CalArts is most known for her work fusing contemporary dance with figure skating. She is founder of American Ice Theatre since 2002 producing dance on ice in performance and education. She also choreographed several modern dance works as Associate Director of Ballet San Jose from 2002-2007. Porter aims to push herself further as a contemporary dance choreographer investigating the non-secular view of western religion inspired spirituality.
To gain entry to the event, you must redeem your Eventbrite ticket at the CalArts Box Office at least 15 minutes prior to curtain. The confirmation sheet does not allow entry to the event. We accept a printed copy of your Eventbrite confirmation or a photo ID for proof of purchase.
The CalArts Box Office is located in the lobby of the third-floor entrance to the CalArts campus near the Main Gallery and the Reception desk.
Unclaimed tickets will be released to rush 15 minutes before curtain when performance is sold out. If you have not claimed your tickets by that time, the Box Office staff reserves the right to resell them to patrons on the rush list. The rush list begins 90 minutes before curtain at the CalArts Box Office and it will be called 15 minutes prior to house opens.
