Description
Join us next week for an artist talk with Koen Vanmechelen. The lecture follows the recent opening of Vanmechelen's solo exhibition, "ENERGY/MASS" at Wasserman Projects.
Koen Vanmechelen believes that art is a vital aspect of society and core to creating vibrant and healthy communities. His wide-ranging creative practice marries exceptional artistry, technological experimentation, and scientific research. Internationally renowned, Vanmechelen is best known from his ongoing Cosmopolitan Chicken Project (CCP), which he first launched in 1999 to explore cultural and biological diversity. A crossbreeding program-through which the artist breeds chickens from around the world-CCP fosters a dialogue on national identity and the interdependence of different cultures, species, and the environment.
"ENERGY/MASS" marks the newest phase of Vanmechelen's ongoing, 20-year-long Cosmopolitan Chicken Project (CCP), where the 19th generation Mechelse Cemani rooster is crossed with the Detroit referred Lavender Wyandotte Hen. The exhibition features the artist's 2D- and 3D-works, alongside live chickens from CCP. The artworks included in the exhibition highlight the artist's engagement with ideas of singularity and duality as manifested in the crossbreeding process and his metaphoric representations of the chicken and the egg.
Koen Vanmechelen's "ENERGY/MASS" is now on view at Wasserman Projects until December 17, 2016.
