Event description

Description

RATING: Moderate (about 5 miles hiking on west side, 200 feet vertical gain/loss), some off-trail travel

Update: In order to accelerate the removal of pulled weeds from the site, we have revised our plan and will be hauling out the pulled weeds on the same day. This enlarged task will be accomplished by rafting the weed bags across the Deschutes River to the fisherman's trail below Riffle Ln at Crooked River Ranch. The westside team will meet as previously planned off Lower Bridge Road (see instructions below) at 8:00 a.m., equipped with tools, bags, ties, and personal gear (remember to bring work gloves). The eastside team will set up a raft and haul line to ferry personnel and materials across the river to the westside site. This effort will start at 7:30 a.m. by carrying raft, ropes and safety equipment down to the river from the parking area (drivable end of Riffle Ln). Westside team members will focus on pulling weeds and collecting them in tied bags. The eastside team will operate the raft shuttle to bring the weed bags to the eastside, then hand carry them uphill to the parking area. Note that the labor force will likely shift from west to east as the weeds complete their final journey. Volunteers have a choice of westside ops only (no rafting experience desired) , eastside ops (rafting likely), or both. Safety equipment (PFDs, throw bags, radios) will be provided for all waterborne participants. FANs will also provide additional tools, bags, and ties as needed (via raft shuttle). The westside team also has the option of removing a growing mullein patch further upstream on the fisherman's trail. Also available for viewing are rock art sites (both east and west sides) as time permits. Raft transportees should bring extra socks/towel in the event of a wet shoreline encounter. When signing up for the event, please indicate your preference of east or west side activities.

If you feel ready for a meaningful challenge, join Friends and Neighbors of the Deschutes Canyon Area (FANs) members for a remote area knapweed removal project. The affected patch is a riparian strip along the Middle Deschutes River at the extreme north end of McKenzie Canyon (north of LaFollette Butte). We have obtained permission for hiking on mostly private land to this infrequently visited area. The path to the river is bounded by interesting canyon wall formations, and the steep drop down to the river follows an old ranch irrigation pipeline, adjacent to a spring-fed gully. Our hike in is about 2 miles. Weeds will be pulled and bagged for hauling up from the river about 200 yards for future collection.

Workers need to bring old clothes, gloves, sturdy footwear, lunch, water, backpacks, sun protection, and a favorite tool if applicable. Hiking poles are useful on steeper slopes. FANs will provide shovels and bags/ties.
