Kiss Me, Kate originally opened in 1948 and received the first Tony Award for Best Musical. A play within a play featuring a group of actors at a theatre in Baltimore on opening night of a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, the musical pays homage to Shakespeare, operetta, and vaudeville while addressing issues of gender, performance, life, and art. Kiss Me, Kate has a book by Samuel and Bella Spewack, music and lyrics by Cole Porter, and is performed by students in the Theatre Arts programs of the College with direction and choreography by Bethany Christine Elkin and musical direction by Justin S. Fischer.
