Event description
"To describe the story is to miss the nuances that make it tantalizing." - Roger Ebert. A rare opportunity to see this classic on 16mm.

Followed by a Q&A

Largely celebrated as a cinematic masterwork, this film is an adaptation from a 1930s James M. Cain novella. At the center of the story is an insurance salesman who falls for another man’s wife and agrees to help her kill him so they can be together. With this screening, the KinoNoir 16mm series continues to explore the human relationships central to the film noir genre as a space for unlocking the national zeitgeist during the close of the WWII era and rumblings of the post-war cultural revolutions.

About KinoNoir

Presented in the original 16mm format, this is an important regional opportunity to reconnect with the unique sensory conditions of film as it was presented on celluloid film. While recent digital restorations have allowed new audiences to more fully appreciate the quality of the cinematographic vision of classic directors, experiencing the magic tactility of the flicker and hum of traditional filmic media is an integral experience to their presentation. Join us in staying curious and keeping endangered media histories alive and thriving in Portland.

KinoNoir is presented on the second Monday of the month by Kinonik and SPACE with support from the Maine Humanities Council.
