Event description

Description

Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research welcomes bestselling author and Harvard University professor Matthew Desmond as a Kinder Institute Forum guest speaker.

Desmond, a MacArthur Foundation “genius” award winner and author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City will discuss his book and his research. His talk takes listeners on a journey into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of eight families living on the edge.

Evicted was named one of the top books of 2016 by nearly three dozen outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Publishers Weekly, Entertainment Weekly, Kirkus, The Boston Globe, and The Wall Street Journal. Jennifer Senior of The New York Times called it 2016’s most “unignorable” book: “Nothing else this year came close.”

Evicted won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction.

Book signing following the lecture. Books will be available to purchase onsite (limited quantity available.)
