Three MonksThree Monks
China, 1980, DVD, 19 min., No Dialogue, Director: A Da

Three Monks is a Chinese animated feature film produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio. It is based on the ancient Chinese proverb "One monk will shoulder two buckets of water, two monks will share the load, but add a third and no one will want to fetch water." The story ends with a happy ending that the three monks finally learned to work together.

Goethe-InstitutLotte Reiniger: Fairytales and Fables
Germany, 1922-1961, DVD, 30 min., German with English subtitles, Director: Lotte Reiniger

Fairytales and music form an integral part of Lotte Reiniger’s (1899-1981) artistic oeuvre and were driving forces behind her work. Moving between different cultures for inspiration, she created animated films full of graceful, beautiful characters. Three of her films, Caliph Stork (Kalif Storch), The Frog Prince (Der Froschkönig) and The Gallant Little Taylor (Das tapfere Schneiderlein), will be shown.

About Kids World Cinema: Inspiring the artistic development of DC children through the discovery of quality foreign films, significant international children’s films and accompanying workshops come to cultural venues throughout Washington.

A project of the Confucius Institute at George Mason University, the Quebec Government Office, the Goethe-Institut, Hillwood Museum Estate and Gardens, the Japan Information and Culture Center of the Embassy of Japan, the Korean Cultural Center Washington DC, the Mexican Cultural Institute, and the Embassy of Spain.
