Description

Day for Families with Special Needs Children

KEEN Day is a full day of activities for children with special needs and their families, featuring performances, movies, storytelling, and more! Countries represented include Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, and the United States.

10:15AM to 11AM - I Will Hug You, Dance performance by PADI PADI Fish (Lithuania) – The hug is understood as a sign of openness and sincere acceptance throughout different cultures and it is inherent from childhood. It helps to grow, sense oneself, become stronger, feel confident and get on with life. This performance tells the story of an older brother who's trying to teach his younger sister to play with her small and motionless arms and – most importantly – to hug. With the help of their parents, her arms "grow up" through the end of the performance and she is able to do so many things: to clap, to play, to draw and to hug.

11:30 – 12:00 PM – Power of Poetry, workshop with puppets (Finland) - Pirjo Polari-Khan's interactive program Power of Poetry is based on her book "Etiquette Village – Book of Manners, Wisdom and Poetry for Children". She and her puppets will take children back to time when there was no media, and when people could not read or write, but knowledge and stories were passes on orally. She hopes to inspire children to read and write and how they can participate in making world a better place for all.

12:00 PM – 12:30 PM – Zumba Dance

12:30 PM to 1:15 PM – Shannon Dunne School of Dance presents a fast-paced review highlighting several styles of Irish dancing, accompanied by traditional Irish music! As the dancers whirl to the lively sounds of Celtic jigs, you’ll have a hard time keeping your own feet still!

12:45 – 1:15 PM – Power of Poetry, workshop with puppets (Finland) - Pirjo Polari-Khan's interactive program Power of Poetry is based on her book "Etiquette Village – Book of Manners, Wisdom and Poetry for Children". She and her puppets will take children back to time when there was no media, and when people could not read or write, but knowledge and stories were passes on orally. She hopes to inspire children to read and write and how they can participate in making world a better place for all.

1:00 PM – 1:30 PM – Zumba Dance

1:45 PM to 3 PM –Toy in the Attic screening (Czech Republic)The animated film is set in a magical world of toys and knick-knacks stored in the attic of a home in Prague. Following the symbolism of the Cold War era that impacted Barta and the Czech Republic, the world of the attic is divided into the land of happy toys in the West and the land of evil in the East. The despotic Head of State rules over the evil empire of the East with a band of sinister minions, insects and rotted vegetables. When the lovely Buttercup is kidnapped and held prisoner by The Head, it is up to her friends – a teddy bear (Forest Whitaker), a mechanical mouse (Joan Cusack) and marionette puppet (Cary Elwes) – to cross the international boundary and attempt their daring rescue.

1:45PM to 3PM: Crafts by Sandy Hoar (Ireland)

Throughout the day there will also be crafts and face painting – and you’re invited to wear your Halloween costume!
