Many new families wonder what to expect from a kidOYO Semester long coding program.  If you are new to coding in general, you may wonder what coding is and what your child will learn at a kidOYO program.  We invite you to take a look into our Spring 2016 program to see student projects, pictures in the classrooms and a snapshot of the courses they will go through.

kidOYO Spring 2016 Semester - a Look Inside

Learning to code requires a good deal of self-motivation. Getting started in a way that makes self-led learning productive is tremendously beneficial, as any of us who have invested effort in isolation can tell you. Once a passion is discovered, the key is to define projects of specific interest to drive skill development. In our semester-long programs, kids have the opportunity to learn many different languages and tools, including Unity game development (including VR), algorthms and databases, Java, Python, Javascript, Android app development, html5 and CSS, CAD and more. While there is value in skimming the surface of these areas, the real value comes by investing in specific projects that push the requirement for specific skills to emerge. No one can do this for you, no one can give you an interest and a passion...but you can be exposed and given the opportunity to pique your own interests to determine if this is indeed an area of learning you are passionate about. Many of the students in kidOYO programs represent this decision, at early ages, to invest in their own learning paths and drive delelopment of their own projects. By accessing kidOYO mentors, they can gain skills, find help in overcoming challenges, work with peers with common interests, and continuously push their own boundaries bringing new skills and approaches to their efforts.

What are the Class Requirements:  Students are required to bring their own laptop which should have updated versions of Flash and Java.  Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems are all acceptable, though we recommend avoiding the Windows 8 operating sytem if at all possible.  Tablets and iPads are not funcitional as anything other than instructional research/support devices.  Please reach out to with any specific questions you may have.

Where is class held?  Classes will be held in the [OLD]Computer Science Building at Stony Brook University.  The best place to park is directly behind the CS Bldg, accessed via Lake Street behind the CS Bldg.  Stony Brook is a huge campus so please familiarize yourself prior to the first day of class.  Maps can be found at this link: SBU MAP

What do students do for lunch?  Each day students have the opportunity to experience lunch on a University campus at the Student Activity Center dining hall.  Students may either bring a lunch or purchase from the cafeteria.  The cafeteria offers a variety of foods including: burgers, pizza, salad bar, sandwiches and a rotating menu of hot food.

Is this a drop off program?  Yes, parents are required to walk students to the classroom and pick up from the classroom but do not need to stay for the program.  Even if you have a teen-ager, you must still walk the students to the program as there is a zero tolerance policy for students under the age of 18 to be unattended.  Each morning (after day 1), mentors will be waiting in the lobby to greet students.  Parents may drop students at the curb as long as they arrive by 9:25am each day.  If you are later, you must park and walk student to classroom.

My child has food allergies, how is this handled? Many of our students have food allergies and during the first few weeks of class, while we get to know our new students, everyone wears a name tag.  Those with allergies will have a special mark on their badge so that mentor/teachers are aware which students will be carrying an epi-pen.  Each morning we ask the students to show us their epi-pen and the location it is stored.  Several of our mentor/teachers have been trained on how to use the epi-pens.

What is your refund policy:  Up until January10th, 2017 you may request a partial refund should you not be able to pariticpate in the program,  $150 is non-refundable.
