Event description

Description

We’re hosting an event that brings together students and faculty from design programs around the city to explore different perspectives on creating and sustaining an independent design practice. We’ve hand-picked five of our favorite local designers to lead a roundtable that will explore how we invent, design, fabricate, and share the work that matters most to us.

Join students from Pratt, Cornell Tech, SVA, NYU, Parsons, and other NYC design programs to get expert perspectives on creating real-world projects.

Bring a prototype, napkin sketch, or problem you're working. We hope to create new connections, set the stage for future collaborations, and possibly even inspire some of you to take on new projects.

This event has been organized in collaboration with Pratt Institute.

Roundtable Facilitators:

Che-Wei Wang and Taylor Levy from CW&T

CW&T is the art and design practice of Che-Wei Wang and Taylor Levy, a creative team that concepts, designs, and makes real the things that they want to see in the world: objects and bits of code that adapt, augment, and transform our surroundings into something better than what was there before.

Danielle Trofe from Grow

Founder of Danielle Trofe Design, a Brooklyn-based design studio that creates innovative solutions at the intersection of science, technology, and design, Trofe aims to encourage a departure from conventional materials and production techniques in search of long-term, sustainable solutions. Trofe has a Master’s degree in Design as well as a Master’s in Biomimicry and teaches a Biodesign studio course at the Pratt Institute. Her work has been featured at the Design Museum in London, the Brooklyn and U.S. Botanic Gardens, in Bryant Park for BMW’s electric car world tour, as well as many hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, such as the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, Blue Park Kitchen, and Hotel Indigo.

Hamish Smyth and Jesse Reed from Standards Manual

Hamish Smyth and Jesse Reed are partners at the Brooklyn-based design office Order. Their focus on identity and branding work has allowed them to work with a variety of companies, including Kickstarter, Adidas, and Shake Shack. They’ve also co-founded Standards Manual, an independent publishing imprint that focuses on archiving lost artifacts of graphic design. The imprint has most notably published reissues of graphic standards manuals for the NYC Transit Authority, NASA, and the United States EPA.

Peter Ragonetti from PTR Design

Peter T. Ragonetti President of PTR Design, LLC in Brooklyn, NY. The studio focuses on providing concept development, product design, and manufacturing support for product and technology companies, along with branding and launch strategy, including crowdfunding expertise.

Vlad Dragusin from CandyLab

Vlad Dragusin is a NYC-based architect with a lifelong passion for applying design to everyday objects. He relentlessly pursues the idea that good design should be woven into everything we touch; it’s a necessity, not a luxury. A father of two and passionate gearhead, he channels this philosophy into the products created through his wooden toy company, Candylab Inc. Within that framework, he and his team have taken on a holistic approach to product design, packaging, marketing, manufacturing, retail, and distribution.
