Hundreds of middle school students have never had the opportunity to participate in team sports simply because they cannot afford the required shoes. Kicks For Class was designed to connect generations and resources so that we can change our future, together. Kicks for Class is the newest program of Communities In Schools of the Coastal Bend, and was created in cooperation with The Heil Law Firm.

Participation in team sports has been shown to lead to an increase in school attendance, higher GPAs, involvement with mentors, and exposure to positive peer pressure. Participation in team sports has also been linked to a decrease in dropout rates and involvement in gangs, especially among middle schoolers.

This sports gala is fundraising in preparation for the fall event, in which deserving students will be paired up with mentors for a special shopping session for their new sports kicks!

MC: David Flores

David Flores, a Corpus Christi native and long-time sports journalist in South Texas has over 43 years of experience. Flores is a former student member of the Texas A&I sports information staff, was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame.

While a student, he was editor and sports editor of the South Texan and received several awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association.

He served as sports editor of the Kingsville Record in 1977-79 and then spent 31 years as assistant sports editor, sportswriter and sports columnist for the San Antonio Express-News.

Flores was also a sportswriter for KENS5, CBS-TV affiliate in San Antonio for 11 years.
