Event description

Description

Kia Ora DC Kiwis is proud to announce that this year’s annual hāngi is going to be back in the ground – and that’s not the only change! With a brand new location, this year’s event is a whole day of Kiwi community-building, cultural education and celebration, and will be our first sustainable event with a focus on reducing waste and environmental impact. Join us for the day or get involved in a whole weekend of activities with family, friends, and friends-to-be.

Date: Saturday, September 22, 2018

Time: 12pm – 7:30pm. Please note that this year’s hangi will be served around 4:30pm, so you’re welcome to bring a picnic lunch or snacks for earlier in the day.

Location: 2410 Spencerville Rd, Spencerville, MD 20868, on the grounds of the Cedar Ridge Community Church

Price: Adult: $30 | Child 6-16yo+: $10 | Child 5yo and younger-: Free

Please note: tickets are available in bundles to avoid higher fees. For example, if you need two adult tickets, select the Two Adult Ticket option rather than buying 2 x One Adult Ticket.

  • Traditional New Zealand hangi meal of meats, vegetables and salad
  • Cold beverages (water and soda)
  • Beer and wine available from 2:30pm until it’s gone
  • Organized activities for the kids - and the kids-at-heart - including games and face painting

All you need to bring is yourself, but there’s a few things that might make your day more enjoyable:

  • Dessert to share (if you have delicious treats you’d like to share)

  • Picnic lunch if you plan to arrive early, and we hope you do!
  • Water bottle, and/or drinking cup to save on plastic

How can I get involved?

Kia Ora DC Kiwis is a 100% volunteer-run organization, and we always depend on an amazing team of volunteers to help us execute these events. There are a number of different ways you can contribute, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to meet and bond with fellow Kiwis in the area. We need help with all aspects of the event, from Friday night food prep, to onsite logistics, entertainment and games, cleanup and more. If you can help in any way (even an hour of your time is a huge help!), please fill in this survey and we will be in touch.

Travelling from out of town?

We have secured a discounted rate at the Doubletree by Hilton in Laurel MD, just four miles from the event. Use the group code “DCK” to receive our special rate.

Kia Ora DC Kiwis is going green!

In line with New Zealand’s clean and green image, we will be working hard to minimize waste produced by our events following good sustainability practices. We are aware of the need to minimize our use of plastic, non-recyclable materials, and to make wise choices about how we use earth’s resources. This hāngi is our first opportunity to roll out this new approach.

We will have recycling receptacles available for plastics, glass and aluminum cans; and composting receptacles for non-meat food waste, paper products, and meat waste/bones. We will provide lightweight washable plates and utensils to reduce the consumption of natural resources and reduce waste that is landfilled or recycled.

Our drop-off stations around the event will explain, with diagrams, what to do with your plates and utensils and show you what to recycle and compost.

We’re excited to bring the clean and green Kiwi mentality to our events and look forward to your help in our efforts. Feel free to share your ideas during the day so that we can continue to improve
