Keying Practicum at Roxborough State Park, Mon., May 22, 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Would you like to build your skills in keying out Colorado flora using a botanical field guide? This class will focus on keying out plants using either Weber's Colorado Flora, Eastern Slope or Ackerfield's Flora of Colorado. Goal is for each participant to successfully key out 8 plants. Plants in bloom may include forbs, shrubs, or any plant with distinguishing characteristics. Participants may practice keying plants out individually or with another student.
Trainer: Lenore Mitchell is on the Board for the Colorado Native Plant Society and teaches for DU's Olli adult education. She has taught Native Plant Master classes since 2006.
Prerequisite: One NPM three-session course or Master Gardener training. Basic Botany class and Plant Families class are recommended for those who would like to refresh their botanical knowledge and is required for those who have minimal background in botany. Required Text (Choose One): 1) Colorado Flora - Eastern Slope, Fourth edition, Weber and Wittmann, OR 2) Flora of Colorado, Ackerfield (recommended). Texts available through the Colorado Native Plant Society's bookstore (https://conps.org/conps-store), local and online retail outlets or the publisher.
When/Where to meet: Meet at 8:45 AM outside the main Visitor Center as class begins at 9:00 AM sharp. The Visitor Center is approximately 1.5 miles in on Roxborough Park Road. Bring park pass or purchase daily pass at the Kiosk at the park entrance ($7 per car). The fee for this class does not include this. Restrooms are at the Visitor Center.
Directions from Wadsworth and C-470: Take Wadsworth south past Chatfield State Park. Turn left on Waterton Road (just before the entrance to Lockheed Martin.) Continue on Waterton Road—crossing the South Platte River, until it ends at North Rampart Range Road (1.6 miles) Turn right (south) on North Rampart Range Road. Continue south past Roxborough Village and the Foothills Water Treatment Plant. (2.3 miles) At the intersection of North Rampart Range Road and Roxborough Park Road (just before the entrance to Arrowhead golf course), turn left onto Roxborough Park Road. Take the next right on East Roxborough Drive(about 50 yards away) to enter the park. Directions from Santa Fe and C-470: Head south on Santa Fe (Highway 85) to Titan Road. (4.2 miles south of C-470 intersection) Turn right (west) on Titan Road. Continue heading west on Titan Road. It will curve and begin to head south—becoming North Rampart Range Road (3 miles). Continue south on North Rampart Range Road past Roxborough Village and the Foothills Water Treatment Plant (3.5 miles). At the intersection of North Rampart Range Road and Roxborough Park Road, turn left onto Roxborough Park Road. Take the next right on East Roxborough Drive(about 50 yards away) to enter the park.
What to bring: Textbook, notebook, pencil, hand lens (approximately 10x), daypack, water, sack lunch, rain gear, sun and wind protection, personal items you will need on the trail where there are no restrooms, etc. Hand lens available through the Colorado Native Plant Society's bookstore (https://conps.org/conps-store) and on-line or local area scientific supply outlets.
What to wear: Layered clothing for changing and/or severe weather conditions, sturdy footwear, hat, etc. Please come prepared for moderately strenuous walking on hot, cold, windy, rainy or snowy days.
