Description

What does it mean to lip-sync? Is it only to mimic or, rather, to represent? Through performance and multimedia-based work, Kevin Quiles Bonilla explores the action of lip syncing as a strategy of embodying not only the physical movement of something already performed, but also the surrogacy of ideals through the contextual undertones of that which is re-presented. Quiles Bonilla focuses on historic speeches regarding colonialism, civil rights, and the marginalization of the Other -- words from the past that must be embodied in the present, now more than ever. Ultimately, this work seeks to explore the construction of a queer, historic heritage, using the body as the political repository, colonized by multiple structures of power. If the body becomes the container of a legacy, how can strategies of surrogacy be expanded through the repertoires and actions that have been embedded in queer culture for a lifetime?

Presented as part of the Leslie-Lohman Queer Theatre and Performance Residency.
