The Genesis of this all star tribute to John Coltrane, Johnny Hartman emanates from a conversation between renowned Saxophonist, Alex Foster and vocalist Kevin Harris. Their mutual love for the iconic record made by these two legendary jazz artists was the impetus behind forming a band worthy of performing this music with authenticity and reverence.

First, find a great pianist. After many calls and possible collaborations, He settled on Mark Berman; a renowned pianist, composer and arranger, who has played and/or recorded with, the proverbial who's who of jazz, pop and rock: Aretha Franklin, Carole King, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Phoebe Snow, Leslie Gore, Gladys Knight, Wycliff Gordon, Hugh Jackman, Burt Bacharach, Chita Rivera, Richie Havens, and many others. He has also performed at Carnegie Hall, Radio City, The Blue Note, Birdland, Smalls, the Rainbow Room and Merkin Hall among other notable New York and international venues.

Next, Kevin called the great Mike Clark,ke who gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock’s group in the early 1970s. Mike became known as a major innovator through his incisive playing on Hancock’s Thrust album, which garnered him an international cult following. While often referred to as the Tony Williams of funk, Mike considers himself a jazz drummer, and in fact has become one of the most vital to sit behind a set. He's performed with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, Vince Guaraldi, Tony Bennett, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson, Rob Dixon, Bobby Hutcherson, Woody Shaw, Donald Harrison, Larry Coryell, Jack Wilkins, Mike Wolff, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Billy Childs, James Genus, Bob Hurst, Chris Potter, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Dave Liebman, Nat Adderly, Oscar Brown Jr., Bill Doggett, Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, Mose Allison, Maxine Brown, Gil Evans and his orchestra and many illuminating etceteras too numerous to list.

Kevin then called his old friend Tony Garnier, both double bass and bass guitar, best known as an accompanist to Bob Dylan, with whom he has played since 1989. He is Dylan's longest-running sideman, and has sometimes been characterized as his "musical director" as well. In addition to his work with Dylan, Garnier has recorded with Tom Waits, Loudon Wainwright III, Paul Simon, Marc Ribot, Eric Andersen and Chris O'Connell, former female singer of Asleep at the Wheel, Western swing band with whom he also played and recorded from 1976 to 1978, and The Lounge Lizards. He also played with Robert Gordon in the early 1980s and Tout Le Monde. He was also a long-time sideman for David Johansen in his Buster Poindexter persona, and was also briefly a member of the Saturday Night Live house band.

Due to Alex’ schedule conflicts, Kevin needed someone who shared his love for this music so he called on the great tenor saxophonist, Craig Handy, who from the time he arrived in New York at age 23 in 1986, was acknowledged as a musician with big, burly tenor sound, sharp wit, and above all, individuality. Over the next few years he would breath life into those accolades through a number of important associations: holding his own on the front line of legendary bebop drummer Roy Haynes' band, working with South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, and weaving sensuous obbligato behind Betty Carter on the kind of tunes most young artist are presumed not to understand.

Kevin had his band of dedicated great musicians who loved this music and the tribute to the iconic collaboration of these artists was born.
