THE KENYAN TRAINING EXPERIENCE
Why are Kenyans so good? Do they have some special running secrets?
Since the 1960s, the nation of Kenya has dominated the distance events in track & field and the marathon. These statistics are even more pronounced when one also considers their annual domination of the highest level of international competition in the IAAF World Cross Country Meet.
Some people believe that Kenyan runners are naturally FAST due to their genetics or environment. Yes, that can play a role, but in reality it is because Kenyans approach their training with pure intention. The Kenyan method of training is often better, harder and more crystallized than the rest of the world. Did you know that Kenyans are not the ONLY fast runners; any runner from ANYWHERE can be as good as Kenyans! YOU CAN BE AS FAST AS A KENYAN. Come learn the Kenyan way of training and take your running to another level! This running clinic is dedicated to giving runners a running experience that help them understand the approach which has made Kenyans the dominant distance runners in international competitions.
This running clinic outlines the four characteristics of Kenyan training which serve as an outline that guide Kenyan training: Simplicity, Focus, Belief, and Togetherness. Use this Kenyan training experience to develop practical and specific methods for you to use in your day-to-day, week-to-week training to push yourself beyond what you think you are capable of. You will be amazed at what YOU CAN DO!
Where will this Running Clinic be held?
1. Tennessee Location: April 20-21, 2013 - Johnson University - Knoxville, TN
Johnson University, located in South Knoxville, will be the site for a Kenyan Running Camp, on 20-21 April 2013. Cost of Camp $35 1-day, $50 weekend; 7 members of team $150 1-day fee, $300 weekend fee- $20 additional per team member. Instruction for camp begins at 1:30 -8:30 on 20 Apr 2013 at 5K Race Site (Change). Expanded classrooms located in the Administration Building will be used if necessary due to inclement weather. On 21 April, camp or running clinic begins at 0800-1600. Runners will start Sunday session with 5 mile shake-out run.
Highlighted runner and World Record Holder Daniel Komen (2-Miile & 3K), will be present providing instruction. He is the only person ever to have run 2 miles in under 8 minutes. He ran the 1st mile in 3:59.4, exactly the same time that Roger Bannister ran when he broke the first sub 4 minute mile back in 1954, but continued to run the 2nd mile in under 4 minutes as well to set a new record of 7:58.61 for 2 miles.
He also ran a time of 7:20.67 for the 3000 metres in Italy in 1996, beating the previous record by a huge 4.5 seconds. What makes this even more remarkable is that he had run a 5 km race in 13:02 in Berlin just 2 days earlier. That 3000m time still stands to this day.
David Cheromei, NAIA National Champion, holder of 10 National records and member of Virginia Intermont's 3X National Championship Team, National Elite 3K Steeplechase Runner and Olympic standard Qualifier, will be delivering instruction through his "Train With Kenyans" Program. David's sister is Lydia Cheromei who won the World XC Championships at age 14. David's cousin, Paul Tergat, held the WR in the marathon. Opportunities for photos and autographs with Daniel Komen, David Cheromei and other national elites will be at the end of camp.
Take Exit 398 (Strawberry Plains Exit)- I-40-and follow green signs to Johnson University. Race site is beside tennis courts left of main gate. Registration on day of race will be at pavillion by tennis courts from 0700-0900.
On 20 April there will be a 5K Race "Fast 5K Cow Race" starting at 0930 (1-mile kids race), 1000 (high school race) and 1045 (Open/Elite race). Starting Official: Daniel Komen.
