When & Where
Kentucky Youth Chorale
The Kentucky Youth Chorale (KYC) is a 501(C)(3), non-profit organization that provides children the opportunity to participate in choral groups at all levels of ability. KYC is an inclusive young singer's chorale program based in Owensboro, KY that interweaves purposeful and sequential music instruction with performance and travel. Known for their performances with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, as well as touring both regionally and internationally, KYC encourages your to consideration of enrolling your child(ren) in their program.
Kentucky Youth Chorale programs include, but are not limited to:
• KYC Preparatory Choir (Ages 8-10) & Kentucky Youth Chorale (Ages 11-16)
This non-competitive program focuses on artistry, arts education, building community and self-esteem. Both choirs are conducted by professionally-trained, highly motivated musicians. The learning environment is creative and explorative. This enables our youth to enjoy lasting relationships with other children, experience self-growth through musical insight and self-expression, and develop a lifelong involvement with music while enhancing all aspects of their lives. Singers who participate have auditioned and stem from all types of schooling including private, public and home schools. It is not a pre-requisite that students be classically trained in music to participate; only that they be willing to learn and work diligently.
• Regional & International Tour Performances, Performances at Civic functions & Celebrations, Business Clubs, Dedications, Parades, River Park Center, Owensboro Symphony Orchestra & etc.
• Music Theory & Sight Singing (Solfeggio) are taught. Emphasis is also placed on the healthy training of a young singer's voice along with self-discipline, respect for self and others, and confidence.
• Student Participants meet on Tuesday evening rehearsals weekly during the school year for a two hour time frame.
KENTUCKY YOUTH CHORALE STAFF
Julie White, KYC Artistic Director
The time and dedication of the KYC staff is something which is nearly unseen amongst other organizations. They truly are remarkable and have a vested interest in each child they help instruct in honing their musical skills and talents! One must see it to believe it, but the amount of talent engrained in these individuals is remarkable. Julie White especially is a wonderfully kind and considerate soul. She specifically sees a spark within each of these young singers and helps kindle it into a burning desire to help them lead as upcoming musicians in our community!
Travel is a big part of KYC. Mrs. White says giving chorale members the experience of traveling overseas has been one of the reasons she formed the choir. “I think it’s important for these children to see the bigger picture and experience the world beyond western Kentucky. And I believe it helps them gauge if they really are considering making a career of singing.”
Mrs. White began Kentucky Youth Chorale as a retirement project in 2008. “I think every community needs a fine children’s choir,” she explains. KYC now consists of 80 students ranging from 8 – 18 years old. Auditions are held in August and January. Tuition for entry is currently $170 per year plus uniform cost (generally $80) but Scholarships have limited availability as well. KYC is also accepting donors who may have a vested interest in seeing a growth of musicianship and artistic community development or those who might like to sponsor a child for the program.
