Event description

Description

Ken Burns, whose landmark films include The Civil War, Baseball, Jazz, and The Central Park Five, is executive producer of College Behind Bars, a four-part documentary series created by his longtime directing partner, Lynn Novick (The Vietnam War, Prohibition, The War) and award-winning producer Sarah Botstein (Jazz, The Vietnam War), exploring the transformative power of education through the experiences of incarcerated men and women trying to earn college degrees through the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI), one of the most rigorous and successful prison education programs in the country. Filmed over four years in maximum and medium security prisons, College Behind Bars airs on PBS stations nationwide November 25 and 26, 2019.

Join Congressman Bobby L. Rush in welcoming renowned documentarians Ken Burns and Lynn Novick for an exclusive preview of highlights from the series, followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Burns, exploring lack of access to education, prison reform, re-entry, and related topics, featuring Congressman Rush, founder and executive director of BPI Max Kenner, president of JustLeadershipUSA DeAnna Hoskins, and BPI alum and chief of staff at the Bronx Defenders Wesley Caines.
