Event description

Description

A lot of us thought Kelly Willis, with her honeyed voice reminiscent of Patsy Cline, would be the next big thing in contemporary country years ago. It didn't work out that way, but she's carved out a fine career spanning rockabilly and alternative country-rock ever since she was first championed to major record labels by famed folksinger Nanci Griffith. Willis broke into the mainstream with hits such as "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" and the "Whatever Way the Wind Blows" (a Marshall Crenshaw cover) from her self-titled 1993 album.

Now, she's out with her first solo disc in a decade, "Back Being Blue."

She will be at North Shore Point House Concerts in the backyard with her band on June 9. Do not miss this rare chance to see her in an intimate setting. The other venues on this run are City Winery in New York, Darryl's House, the home of Darryl Hall, and The Birchmere. And then North Shore Point House Concerts. That's thanks to your support. "It took Kelly exactly 6 minutes to respond with an enthusiastic YES! after I sent her the link to your past shows!" says her agent.

"Whether she was wishing for comfort, admitting to a bruised heart, yielding to illicit romance or trying to say goodbye, her voice was modest and true, illuminating the delicate tension and pain in every line," writes The New York Times. In recent years, she's released two albums with hubby Bruce Robison, who will be home tending to their four children while she tours behind "Back Being Blue."

I wanted to make a fun, interesting record that leans on the influences that first inspired me to make music,” she says. “I don’t think of it as even being so much about my vocals as an album about the vibe. The important thing to me was to take these songs and to get them just right musically. And in my mind, I was thinking of where maybe Skeeter Davis meets Rockpile or Marshall Crenshaw meets the Louvin Brothers."

Check out a few of her tunes:

"Baby Take a Piece of My Heart"

"Take Me Down"

"Cradle of Love"

The donation is $25, though you can always give more to help cover costs. Show time is 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.
