Event description
Keiji Haino: A Night of Hurdy-gurdy Music

About this Event

While Keiji Haino is renowned around the world for his performances with voice and guitar, his work with the hurdy-gurdy has almost never been heard live outside of Japan. His dedication to this esoteric ancient instrument, has yielded some of the most unique and enchanting music of his career. The hurdy-gurdy originated in the middle ages with roots in both the Middle East and Europe and features a hand crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against strings to create rich layers of drone harmonics. Haino's three "21st Century Hard-Y-Guide-Y Man" albums published between 1995 and 2008 represent a major advancement of the instrument from the middle ages to the modern era.

His performance at Zebulon on April 7th will be an incredibly rare chance to see him perform with this instrument.

It promises to be historic as it will be his second ever hurdy-gurdy performance in the U.S., the first in over 20 years.

Tickets will be limited as to allow for the audience to be fully seated for this special performance.

It is also his sole U.S. performance and part of the current exhibition Parergon: Japanese Art of the 1980s and 1990s presented at Blum & Poe Gallery.
