Event description

Description

Join us, Debris Free Oceans, and Slow Food Miami for this month's community clean up. Working together to clean up Wynwood, we will make an impact on the neighborhood, as well as Biscayne Bay and our Miami beaches. Trash eventually makes its way from city centers like Wynwood to our waterways, harming marine life and water quality.

This month's clean up will weave together different concepts of sustainability, and we will explore how they are all interconnected, and all make an impact on our environment. There are so many ways that we can reduce our carbon footprint, from sourcing locally, choosing conscientious chefs, producers, and breweries, composting our own waste, reducing our use of single use plastics, and picking up trash around our community.

We will start at 2pm in the garden at the yard with a beer from Saltwater Brewery.
Slow Food Miami representatives will be there to share info and experience, and talk about why and how local sourcing, farm to table, and children's school gardens are making a difference in Miami. Find out how you can get involved in these programs.

The Worm Whisperer will demonstrate composting in a free 30 minute demonstration, and we will learn about why composting is important for our health and the health of our environment, and how it ties in to the concept of reducing waste, a big focus of Debris Free Oceans. You can even buy compost to take home to your own home garden. Get a snack at the Be Cultured Tempeh table before we head out to clean up the town.

Around 3pm, we will gather to hear from the Debris Free Oceans team, and get ready to get out and clean. Grab your cup, trash bags, gloves, pickers, and directions, and we'll make our way through the neighborhood. We'll grab a snack from Zak the Baker, and other food & drink along the way... details to be confirmed soon! End at the Bar at the Yard with live reggae music and more refreshments, TBD.

Cost is only $20 to participate, and guests receive an awesome Klean Kanteen reusable cup that will be filled along the way by participating partners. (It will also get you a dollar off every beer purchased The Wynwood Yard when you bring your cups.) You will also get a FREE compost workshop included in the activity price. Proceeds raised go toDebris Free Oceans and Slow Food Miami

The Wynwood Yard will be continuing with monthly community clean ups in the neighborhood throughout the year, teaming up with local non-profits and community partners.

More info about this program:

Our first "unofficial" community clean up was on June 24th with We-CCAAN Teen Leadership, Culture & Service Learning Tours Teen Leadership, Culture & Service Learning Tours and in partnership with Dr Smood, who graciously provided refreshments for the 50 participants along their way. Thank you also to Radiate and della for end-of-the-road sips and bites.

Our first "official" clean up was a pub crawl pick up, and we partnered with Boxelder Craft Beer Market, Wynwood Brewing Company, Coyo Taco, and Saltwater Brewery. You can check out photos here.

Each clean up will take place at a different time of day, featuring unique non profit partners, and a different "theme." At each one, participants will gather and walk the neighborhoods along pre-arranged routes to help make Wynwood a cleaner place. Proceeds of partcipation donations will go toward partnering non-profit organizations.

Bags and gloves will be provided.

Complimentary snacks and refreshments will be provided along the way and after the clean up, depending on that month's partners.
