Keep Romeo & Juliet Alive!
Monday, March 10, 2014 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (PDT)
Santa Clarita, CA
Join us for a Special Preview of Romeo & Juliet.
Come share some wine & treats, enjoy the performance, and take part in our silent auction. Hosted at the beautiful REP East Playhouse in the Downtown Newhall Arts & Theatre District.
This is a special event for our patrons in support of our in-school program and to help us raise funds to keep this program affordable for our schools.
Our goal is to bring this program free of charge directly to every 9th grader in our valley. The cost of bringing this production to our schools is $850 per location, which is significantly lower than other touring companies have been charging our district schools.
Why Keep Romeo & Juliet Alive?
Whereas studying the play may instruct students with the language, poetry, and structure of the play, Shakespeare wrote his plays with the sole intention of being performed and watched. It is only when his plays are performed that the language comes to life and the lessons resonate with students.
While many believe the play to be a romantic story, the true lessons of the play lay in the tragedy. The volatile combination of budding independence, hormonal drive, and impetuous behavior is relatable and significant to many 9th grade students. The impetuous behavior of teenagers making choices without considering the consequences could have been pulled from today’s headlines or an entertainment newscast. It is this timelessness that connects with young audiences.
