EMAIL MARKETING FOR NONPROFITS: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE WOW

JESSICA BEST, DIRECTOR OF DATA-DRIVEN MARKETING, BARKLEY

Jessica is one part massive email marketing nerd and one part permission-marketing evangelist. She’s stimulated ROI in customer- and data-driven marketing for a diverse clientele, including Dairy Queen, Spirit Airlines, Wingstop, Beauty Brands, Hostess, Water.org, Associated Wholesale Grocers, Farmland Foods, Hallmark Baby, Banfield Pet Hospitals, SelectQuote, and Boulevard Brewing Company, among many more.

 

As an evangelist, Jessica also spread the good word of great email marketing from the stage. Over the last 4 years, she’s lead trainings and spoken in front of audiences from dozens to over 300 from Las Vegas to New York City to SXSW Interactive in Austin in 2013. In 2016, she joined the Barkley team as Director of Data-Driven Marketing, implementing the best practices she preaches for Barkley clients.

MONICA TIFFANY, CREATIVE DIRECTOR/PRINCIPAL

Monica Tiffany specializes in developing effective communications strategy for companies and organizations. She has written for Shriners Hospitals for Children, National Geographic, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the American Red Cross, to name a few. Monica served as VP of Marketing and Communications for the Association of Fundraising Professionals — Mid-America Chapter. She currently serves as Marketing Chair on the CASA of Jackson County board and is a member of the Reach Out and Read KC Community Council. As a professional copywriter, she speaks to both local and national audiences about copywriting, messaging and creative strategy. Prior to joining M&C, Monica spent five years in nonprofit association management.

 

MERRITT ENGEL, PRESIDENT/PRINCIPAL 

Merritt Engel is a direct marketing strategist, copywriter and trainer. She specializes in providing measurable results for clients through a range of marketing channels, print and digital. She regularly consults and writes for both for-profit and nonprofit national organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the University of Kansas Physicians Group and Hospital. Merritt serves on the faculty at Rockhurst University, where she developed and teaches the Marketing and Technology Trends course. She is past president of the Kansas City Direct Marketing Association. KCDMA named Merritt “Direct Marketer of the Year” in 2012. She was recently honored as a member of the 2016 40 Under Forty class by Ingram's Magazine

 

Merritt currently serves as the President of the Kansas City Direct Marketing Education Foundation, as well as serving as Marketing Chair for the Communications Studies Alumni Board at the KU Edwards Campus. 

 

She received her undergraduate degree in Communication Studies from Rockhurst University and a Masters in the same discipline from the University of Kansas.

 

VISUAL STORYTELLING 

James Hopper, Professor/Chair Web Development and Digital Media

James Hopper is Professor and Chair of the Web Development and Digital Media program at Johnson County Community College. He has over 20 years’ experience teaching web design/development and digital media, including storytelling at Johnson County Community College and over 30 years’ experience creating media rich interactive websites and digital media stories. He has spoken at national conferences, such as, the National Association of Government Web Professionals on storytelling and web design.  He graduated from Kansas University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Journalism he is currently working on a Master’s degree in Graphic Information Technology from Arizona State University.
