Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op.24

“Amazement.” – pianist Yuja Wang

“Passionate,” “expressive,” “bold,” and “sensitive:” this is how critics glowingly described pianist Kayoung An’s performance with the Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie at the Seoul Arts Center. It “penetrated deep into the heart, evoking an image of an artist painting on a canvas with a brush” - Music Review, August 2017.

Pianist Kayoung An has appeared extensively throughout the United States, Korea, Canada, and Italy. She has toured in Korea with Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie in 2017 and performed with renowned orchestras such as Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonians, Amadeo Philharmonic Society, Bar Harbor Festival String Orchestra, Contemporary Repertoire Orchestra, and Morningside Heights Chamber Orchestra. Her performances have been widely broadcasted on Cogeco TV, KBS Classic FM (Musical Common Ground), and KBS-TV (Music Anchor Desk). Kayoung has also been interviewed by Luister, Music Today, Music Journal, and the East Hampton Star. During her dedicated musical career, she was fortunate to work with prominent conductors such as Gábor Hontvári, Lawrence Golan, Francis Fortier, and others. Kayoung recently recorded Bernard Hoffer’s ‘Concerto Grosso for Piano and Strings (2014)’ with conductor David Gilbert. In the 2021- 2022 season, she has been on a grand project of documenting the complete piano music/ chamber music of award-winning composer Bernard Hoffer. The recording is expected to be released by Albany Records in 2023.

Winner of the First Prize at the New York International Artists Association Piano Competition and the Silver Award winner at the Paris International Competition, Kayoung made her debut in Weill Carnegie Recital Hall in 2013. She has also been a top prize-winner at the IBLA Grand Prize International Competition, Kiwanis Music Competition, Korea All-States National, Darius Milhaud Performance Prize, CIM Concerto Competition, Kumho Young Artist, and Ujung Rising Star Auditions. She also was invited and performed at the Aspen Music Festival, Bowdoin Music Festival, Pianofest in the Hamptons, Babayan International Academy, Norfolk (Conn.) Chamber Music Festival and the Rimsky-Korsakov Music Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Dr. Kayoung An was awarded the coveted Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) by the Manhattan School of Music in 2020. She is also a proud graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music (B.Mus.), and the New England Conservatory (M.Mus.). She is also a graduate of Colburn Conservatory of Music (Artist Diploma) where she received a full-scholarship.

In her free time, she enjoys hot yoga, tennis, golf, and hiking with her husband, Joe.
