The Kathryn Krause Lecture Series in Nursing and Health Sciences is designed to provide current Broward College nursing students, health science students and local nursing professionals with the opportunity to learn more about relevant topics in health care from a nursing perspective.

The Many Faces of Sepsis

Guest Speaker:
Tracey Melhuish, MSN, RN, CCRN

Mrs. Tracey Melhuish is the Clinical Practice Specialist, Critical Care and the Sepsis Coordinator at Holy Cross Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Tracey’s career spans twenty two years of clinical and educational experience. Mrs. Melhuish was selected as the Sepsis Coordinator in 2015 and is responsible for the implementation of a goal-directed sepsis program, as well as evidence based practice and nursing research projects at Holy Cross Hospital.

Sepsis is a Killer!! Sepsis kills over 258,000 Americans each year and is the third leading cause of deaths in U.S. hospitals. This presentation will provide an overview of sepsis, the faces of sepsis and their stories, early symptoms and the important difference nursing makes in early sepsis identification.

Learner Objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation, the participant should:

1.  List the top three symptoms of sepsis

2.  Explain the clinical presentation, nursing assessment, and medical management

3.  Discuss the potential complications and survival rates of sepsis

4.  Describe the role Nursing plays in early sepsis identification.


What are my parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking is available in the Parking Garage across the street from the Health Sciences Simulation Center.

Are there ID requirements to enter the event? YES

Nursing students need to present BC Student ID Badge.
BC Nursing Faculty need to present BC Faculty/Staff ID Badge
RNs need to bring their Nursing License number to receive contact hours

Will Nursing contact Hours be awarded to licensed RNs? YES
3.0 contact Hours will be awarded by the Broward College, CE/WFD - Health Sciences
Florida Board of Nursing CE Broker Provider Number: 50-266

What can I bring to the event?

Bring a sweater or jacket since the Auditorium may be cool.

Will be breakfast served? YES

Continental breakfast with coffee, tea, and juice will be served in the South Collaboration Lobby
