July 15, 2016 - Kappa Alpha Psi, a historically African-American fraternity, has selected Orlando, Florida, as the host city for one of its 2017 bi-annual conventions. The convention will take place at Rosen Shingle Creek between July 18, 2017 and July 22, 2017, according to fraternity leaders. A community service project is part of the 83rd Grand Chapter Meeting.
"We strongly believe it's important to provide a service to help fulfill a community need in every city where we have our conclave," said Tony Foster, co-chairman of the fraternity's local convention planning team, in a news release. The project, which will connected to the convention's theme of "Leave a Legacy...Build a Future," will be announced July 15 during an event at the Lake Eola ampitheater in downtown Orlando.
"Our plan is to ensure that Kappa Alpha Psi leaves its stamp on Orlando by creating or enhancing a project or program that will have long-lasting-value," said Foster. Erick Wicker, who co-chairs the planning team, said the July 15 announcement will also include a list of activities planned in advance of the convention. "It will give us great opportunity to share information about local Kappa Alpha Psi initiatives that benefit youth and families and how others can join us in those efforts," said Wicker.
There is a Kappa Alpha Psi chapter at the University of Central Florida. There are also alumni chapters based in Orlando and Winter Park. Kappa leaders did not say how many people are expected to attend the convention, but that fraternity has more than 150,000 members nationwide and many are expected to attend the event.
