Event description

Description

It's almost time for the KAPIO Conference 2018! This is a two-day conference where public information officers, communications staff, crisis communicators, and others who communicate with the public gather to learn, understand current trends, and network with others in our field. This conference is not limited to those who are members - all are welcome who perform these types of tasks in a government or quasi-government/non-profit field.

Each day, we will offer a general session keynote:

Thursday, May 3:

Carla Wyatt received a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Biology from Texas Southern University. In 2007 Carla received her Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology also from Texas Southern University. For the past 15 years Carla has served in several capacities at Harris County she is currently a Manager in the Central Technology Services Department. One of her more important roles while working at Harris County has been to work in the Regional Joint Information Center at the Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management during disasters. Although she has worked numerous activations, 2016 was the first time she had command of the Regional Joint Information Center during the epic “Tax Day” Flood. Since that time she has been a constant during activations in the region from Tropical Storm Cindy and historic Hurricane Harvey in 2017 as the Regional Joint Information Manager.

Friday, May 4:

Daniel Post Senning, great-great-grandson of Emily Post and author of Emily Post's Etiquette and The Etiquette Advantage in Business, will present on using social skills to maximize personal and professional success. In a world that is challenged by a shifting communication landscape and increasingly complex and informal social expectations recommitting to a framework for decision making that prioritizes relationships offers tremendous benefits. In this talk we will look at how social expectations have both changed over time and at the same time have stayed rooted in certain fundamental principles. Core values of consideration, respect and honesty remain power tools for solving difficult situations and determining behavior in circumstances that range from the family, to the office to the social media landscape. We will cover both the big picture concepts and specific tips and skills for communicating effectively in person, via email and online.

Daniel Post Senning is the great-great grandson of Emily Post and a co-author of Emily Post’s Etiquette, 19th edition and The Etiquette Advantage in Business, 3rd edition. He is also the author of Manners in a Digital World: Living Well Online.
