Baseball is Taiwan’s national sport. When one thinks about the beginnings of baseball in Taiwan, most people think of the Taitung Red Leaves who beat Japan's all-star team and became the champion at the Little League World Series at Williamsport in the 1960s.

But as early as the beginning of the twentieth century, Taiwan already had a high school baseball team that made it to the high school baseball championship of the Great Japanese Empire. Based on a true story, through the film's exquisite and realistic cinematography, KANO depicts the epic journey of a losing Taiwanese highschool baseball team who overcame mockery and discrimination to transform themselves into an undefeated team who managed to enter the ultimate championship game of the Japanese Empire, the Koshien tournament.

KANO is a movie of heart and soul that you must watch. The film features meticulously restored scenes of Taiwan in the early 20th century allowing us a glimpse into the daily life of Taiwanese people during the Japanese colonial era. And then, we are given a bizarre feeling that the multitude of Japanese who dominated Taiwanese society at that time, all suddenly disappeared off of Taiwan after WWII, just like the dinosaurs.

Most importantly, through the tears and sweat in the film, you must agree that the indomitable spirit of the Taiwanese people to struggle and continuously make progress in the humblest situations is perhaps the greatest spiritual asset that our forerunners have left us.
