Kal Penn presents You Can't Be Serious • Sunday, August 28・6:30pm Doors・7:30pm Show

About this event

Join Greenlight Bookstore at The Bell House to celebrate the paperback release of actor Kal Penn's bestselling memoir, You Can't Be Serious. Penn--star of some of the world’s most-watched television shows and movies, including Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, How I Met Your Mother, 24, Designated Survivor, House, and more--recounts why he rejected the advice of his aunties and guidance counselors and, instead of becoming a doctor or “something practical,” embarked on a surprising journey that has included confronting racism in Hollywood, meeting his future husband, and working in the Obama administration. With intelligence, humor, and charm, he shares the funny, consequential, awkward, and ridiculous stories that make up his journey so far--from sliding off an oiled-up woman in Van Wilder to his unpromising first date with his fiancé Josh to flying with President Obama in Air Force One. But above all, You Can’t Be Serious shows that everyone can have more than one life story--no matter who you are and where you come from, you have many more choices than those presented to you. Penn will be joined in conversation by a special guest to be announced for a celebration of this refreshing and wonderfully candid memoir from one of Hollywood's most unique figures.

This event is not socially distanced. All attendees must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to attend the event and wear masks when not eating or drinking.

Book-bundled tickets include one signed copy of You Can't Be Serious, to be picked up at the event.

Kal will be interviewed by Cody Keenan

Cody Keenan rose from a campaign intern in Chicago to become chief speechwriter at the White House and Barack Obama’s post-presidential collaborator. He's been named the “Springsteen” of the Obama White House even though he can’t play an instrument, Obama calls him “Hemingway” for reasons that have little to do with his talent or seasonal beard, and British GQ once named Cody one of the “35 Coolest Men under 38 (and a Half),” ahead of Ryan Gosling, but behind Tom Hardy.

Cody got his start as a young aide to the legendary senator Edward M. Kennedy before earning a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Today, he is a partner at leading speechwriting firm Fenway Strategies and teaches a popular course on speechwriting to undergraduates at his alma mater Northwestern University. His first book, GRACE: President Obama and Ten Days in the Battle for America, will be published on October 4, 2022.

Cody lives in New York City with his wife Kristen and their toddler Gracie.
