Description

The Peace and Justice Institute of Valencia College invites you to attend our upcoming workshop, Kaepernick and the National Anthem.

When Colin Kaepernick took a knee, he authored a new chapter about peaceful protest in the United States. How have his efforts impacted the dialogue about social justice?

This interactive workshop will invite participants to discuss Privilege, Pride and Patriotism through the lens of the differing opinions about Colin Kaepernick and his decision to “take a knee.”

Workshop Facilitator: Hank Van Putten

A native of Jamaica, New York, Hank Van Putten earned his B.S. in Education from Northeastern University, and a M.Ed. from Cambridge College. His career in public, private and higher education spans the past five decades.

Hank is an anti-racist educator whose interests have focused on the academic achievement of African American students through the lens of race and racial identity.

Hank has led numerous professional development opportunities for students, educators and community members. Additionally, he has facilitated and been an invited presenter, panelist and speaker on numerous occasions, including the Harvard Law School, the ASCD National Convention, State Convention of the Florida African American Student Association, the City of Alexandria, VA. Police Department, Orlando Speaks, and the League of Women Voters.

Hank is currently teaching faculty professional development offerings at Valencia College, and is the Lead Facilitator for the college’s Peace and Justice Institute’s Teacher Academy.

Greatest amongst Hanks blessings is a blended family with his wife Gail. Together, they have four children, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
