***ESSENTIAL gig alert!***

Struggling to not botch what should be the greatest pitch in an event invite... but it aint easy. How to describe someone who is so unique, you fail to find words to describe, without sounding cliche? Will do my best.

This gig comes at the recommendation of the most trusted members of our collective. I first heard Ka on the Spires That In The Sunset Rise 7" that Josephine Foster convinced me to find.

(Thanks JoFo!). Much time has passed, and many things have happened. We are lucky to host this gig! More info...

"Ka Baird is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist living and working in NYC. She is one of the founding and continuing members of the long running avant psych project Spires That In The Sunset Rise. Described by Jack Rose as a "female Sun City Girls," STITSR have contributed a different slant to the New Folk movement by incorporating various avant-garde and world music influences into their music. Their sound has been compared to the Raincoats, Meredith Monk, Comus and Harry Partch. Their most recent album "Beasts In The Garden" was described by Marc Masters as "some kind of long-lost Terry Riley/Angus MacLise collaboration, equally devoted to divine repetition and center-seeking ritual." Since 2001, they have released eight full length records and several side releases.

Since relocating to NYC in November 2014, Baird has set off in numerous directions apart from Spires with new collaborations as well as honing in on her own solo work. Her current work explores piano improvisation, electroacoustic interventions, extended vocal techniques, physical movement, and her electronic manipulation of the flute. She released an album of piano improvisations through Brooklyn label Perfect Wave "See Sun Think Shadow" in November of 2015 and a tribute record "A Love Supreme" dedicated to John Coltrane through Chicago label No Index in January of 2016. She has toured extensively both nationally and internationally with performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), MoMA PS1 (Brooklyn), Roulette Intermedium (Brooklyn), Issue Project Room (Brooklyn), Cafe OTO (London) and numerous festival appearances including TUSK (Newcastle, UK), Incubate (Tilburg, Netherlands), KRAAK and Festival Of Endless Gratitude (Copenhagen, DK). She also co-runs the label and concert organizer Perfect Wave with Camilla Padgitt-Coles."

a birdsong from another dimension

Born in Lima, Peru, Maria Chavez is known as an abstract turntablist, sound artist and DJ. Accidents, coincidence and failures are themes that unite her sound sculptures, installations and other works with her solo turntable performance practice.

Routledge Press chose Maria to be on the cover of the latest edition of their Electronic and Experimental textbook that is distributed widely throughout academia. The book is used in Universities and Music programs all over the world as a first-year course for students interested in the world of avant garde and electronic sound practice.

Maria wrote her first book on her unique approach to abstract turntablism in 2012 titled, OF TECHNIQUE: Chance Procedures on Turntable, a book of essays and illustrations that guide the novice turntablist to explore the world of needles and vinyl through the lens of deterioration, destruction and the unexpected.

Maria regularly teaches workshops introducing students to her turntable practice all over the world and has been a research fellow with the Sound Practice Research Department of Goldsmith’s University of London since 2015.

She presents lectures on sound art, improvisation, multi-channel speaker installation practice, most recently for Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Stony Brook University, the Contemporary Arts Museum-Houston, Berklee College-Valencia, Spain and others later in the fall/winter season.

Maria Chavez has shared her expansive music collection alongside iconic electronic musicians and DJ’s like; Simian Mobile Disco, POWELL, Rick Wade (Detroit), Francois K, Beatrice Dillon and others.

You can hear her sets, that vary from the eclectic to House & Techno, in openings for art museums (MoMA, MoMA PS1, Haus für elektronische Künste- Basel), gala events (Van Alen Institute, El Museo del Barrio, BRIC-Brooklyn), New York Fashion Week- NYFW (SunheeNY, BeBe, Bimba y Lola, Pola Thomson, VOUTSA), festivals (Moving Sounds, 9 Evenings, Villa Romana Festival- Firenze) and radio stations. (NTS Radio, The LOT Radio, Reboot.fm, RBMA Radio)

Plenty to hear here:

Nice read:

Enough can't be said about Zach Rowden and the company he keeps. We can barely keep up with his output, his collaborations, his record selections, his travels, and his all-around-good nature.

New Haven is lucky to have trailblazers like Tongue Depressor.

And dont you know? Birds of a feather flock together:

Ka Baird also requested this addition to the bill. Synchronicity is REAL.

Expect the unexpected with this fiddle duo.

DJ Kryssi B

You may know her from WPKN, or Headroom, or Mountain Movers...

guitar goddess rocks the turntables with heady selections all night long!
