Event description
Join us for a two-day K-8 arts integration institute featuring teaching artist, Randy Barron!

About this event

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts defines arts integration as "an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject and meets evolving objectives in both."

Join us for a two-day arts integration institute featuring teaching artist Randy Barron where we'll explore techniques for integrating the art of movement to promote learning across the curriculum.

Primary grade workshops will be presented in the morning for K-2 grade teachers, with intermediate grade workshops in the afternoon for 3-8 grade teachers.

Schedule - Day 1:

Thursday, July 29th - 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM

K-2: BEST Behaviors

“BEST Behaviors” Workshop, a skill-building workshop based in creative dance strategies. The workshop includes techniques for moving students from place to place, developing body and voice self-control, and managing space in the classroom. Using fun, fast-paced, and immediately useful activities make the workshop fly by, and teachers will leave with step-by-step instructions for making the classroom a safe and creative space for students to construct and demonstrate understanding through movement.

Schedule - Day 2:

Friday, July 30th - 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM

K-2: Math on the Move

Through dance and creative movement activities, students become kinesthetically and visually engaged in creating number sense and developing an understanding of the important ideas underlying all of mathematics. In this activity-focused workshop, Mr. Barron leads teachers in a set of lessons that help students build their own mathematical understanding while making dances. Participants learn and practice the basic elements of dance and choreography in order to create movement solutions to mathematical problems. Teachers will leave with a comprehensive set of tools for immediate use in teaching mathematics and assessing student creative products, while helping students’ brains develop through movement.

The Partners in Education program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is designed to support local school systems by providing professional learning in the arts for teachers. Workshops are open to any area teacher or school administrator, and are a fun, valuable opportunity to gain contact hours towards Continuing Education Credits (CEUs). Inducted in 2010, the Mansfield team is one of less than 100 partnership sites in the nation. The Ohio 2010 team is generously sponsored by Charles P. Hahn of Cleveland Financial, with additional funding from the Ohio Arts Council.
