Event description

Description

Join us for a two-day workshop featuring teaching artists Cheryl Mertz and Marcia Daft, where we'll explore techniques for integrating movement and music to boost math and literacy learning. Primary grade workshops will be presented in the morning for kindergarten through 2nd grade teachers, with intermediate grade workshops in the afternoon for 3rd-5th grade teachers.

Schedule:

Thursday, August 3rd: Grouping Games for Teaching the Language of Mathematics
Designed by Marcia Daft, Presented by Cheryl Mertz
9 a.m. - 12:00 pm, Kindergarten through 2nd Grade teachers
1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., 3rd through 5th grade teachers

Moving Through Math is an arts-integrated math curriculum for teaching the foundations of mathematics. In this workshop, learn how to help students make connections between drama, spatial reasoning, language, and math. During Grouping Games, students learn on four different levels:

  • through using their bodies to represent mathematical concepts
  • through collaborating with other students in small groups to collectively represent mathematical thinking
  • through using the Language of Math to clearly and concisely describe their thinking
  • through using their imaginations to create original ways of representing mathematical thinking.

Grouping Games provide learners with strong kinesthetic, visual and spatial representations of math concepts, while strengthening their correct usage and understanding of mathematical language.

Friday, August 4th: Word Painting: Reading and Writing with Expression
Designed and Presented by Marcia Daft
9 a.m. - 12:00 pm, Kindergarten through 2nd Grade teachers
1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., 3rd through 5th grade teachers

How can you help students change their reading and writing from a plodding monotone to an expressive voice?

In this workshop, discover how to teach the elements of vocal expression in ways that are easily understood, practiced, and mastered by students. Explore how expression deepens students’ reading comprehension and their understanding of inference. And learn how to write poems and stories with students that develop their expressive voice. Teach these techniques to your students and see how their language development flourishes!

Join Marcia Daft, award-winning author, musician and national teaching artist, for this fascinating workshop.

Contact hour verification for CEUs is available. For more information, call 419-522-2726 ext. 251 or email chelsie@mansfieldtickets.com.
