Description
As part of the 2018 Indigenous Education Week at the University of Toronto, join us for an interactive zine-making workshop with artist Kaya Joan. Zines are self-published booklets that give voice and representation to groups and/or individuals who may have been unheard and underrepresented. This art form can take many different forms and cover many different topics. No previous experience is necessary and all materials are provided in this free workshop.
About the facilitator:
Kaya Joan is a multi-disciplinary mixed Afro-Indigenous (Mohawk/ Cree/ Taino/ Arawak)-settler artist living in T’karonto (Dish with One Spoon treaty territory). Her work focuses on healing, transcending ancestral knowledge and creating dreamscapes/ illustrating spirits rooted from the land of her ancestors (Turtle Island and the Caribbean). Afro and Indigenous futurity and pedagogy are also centred in Kaya’s practice, as she works through her buried family histories to explore how creation can heal 7 generations into the past and future.
Kaya has been working in community arts for 4 years as a facilitator and artist. Community arts is essential to strengthen solidarity, resilience and resurgence
