Event Details

Just Breathe Miami is excited to be partnering with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) Foundation for its 2020 fundraising event "Just Breathe for Sleep Apnea". The fundraiser expects to build on its earlier successful events for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation and the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, events that raised approximately $18,000 for these chronic illnesses. Proceeds from this event will support the AASM Foundation mission to promote sleep research and enhance the health of those afflicted with sleep apnea. The evening will include:

  • 3 hour of open bar (wine, beer, liquor), appetizers, guest speakers, raffle prizes, and music.

  • Special guests include real sleep patients, an AASM Past President, and an Active Director of the AASM Board of Directors

  • All proceeds from this event will benefit the AASM.  Tickets are $100 and include entry to the event as well as $65 donation to the association.

  • Additional donations for this event may be made here:

Why obstructive sleep apnea?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) affects 15-30% of males and 10-15% of females. About 936 million adults worldwide have OSAYou do not need to be overweight to have OSA but many people with OSA are overweight. OSA affects people of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds. The occurrence is increasing, possibly due to higher rates of obesity and increased awareness of OSA. Surprisingly, most affected with OSA remain undiagnosed.

In addition to causing disruptive snoring, poor sleep, fatigue and daytime sleepiness, OSA increases risk for some life-threatening illnesses. Heart attacks, strokes, difficulty to control blood pressure, diabetes, depression, and memory disorders are more common in those with OSA. Fortunately, symptoms of OSA respond favorably to treatment and studies show that controlling OSA improves heart and brain heath.

OSA is easy to diagnose and has effective treatments. Your contributions will help improve the health and quality of life of patients with this common and treatable disorder of sleep.

About the AASM Foundation

The AASM is the professional medical society that represents organized sleep medicine. The society boasts approximately 11,000 members comprised of sleep centers, physicians, scientists, and other health care professionals. As the leading voice in the sleep field, the AASM sets standards and promotes excellence in sleep health care, education, and research.

Since its inception in 1998, the AASM Foundation has awarded $13.5 million dollars in funds for adult and pediatric initiatives that directly support career development of sleep scientists, high-impact sleep research, and community sleep programs.  As example, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina the AASM created the Foundation Disaster Relief Fund to minimize interruption in sleep health care in the wake of natural disasters. The 2019-2020 AASM Foundation strategic plan aims to "improve the health of all people by supporting sleep science that matters to patients, practitioners and the public."

Dr. Kori Ascher

My name is Kori Ascher.  I am a curent Sleep Medicine Physician in training at University of Miami UHealth Sleep Center, active practicing Pulmonary & Critical Care Physician at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami and previously completed my Internal Medicine Residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center. In my short career I have already met so many good people with debilitating pulmonary diseases that inevitably consume their lives and lives of their loved ones.  Many of the medications or treatments prescribed are not free, cheap, or easy to tolerate.  I created the non-profit organization Just Breathe Miami with an annual fundraiser dedicated to a different pulmonary disease each year.  In addition to the medical management we already provide, this is a way for us all to come together, connect with our patients, and share our support for those people significantly impacted by pulmonary disease...... those who struggle to just breathe.
