Description

OVERVIEW

Concrete Safaris' JungleGym 2017 is a 1-block run through a 20-obstacle challenge for children and their families, and an active living fair. The event is designed by the 7-12-year-olds in Concrete Safaris' City Surfers after school programs. Children (ages 5+), teens, and adults will have the opportunity to race as they hop, leap, crawl, and wiggle through 20+ obstacles designed by Concrete Safaris' students in the organization's third annual JungleGym obstacle race. Volunteers will help with set-up, breakdown, and all aspects of run-of-show for this event series.

VOLUNTEER SCHEDULE

Individuals can register to volunteer for the full-day (8 a.m. - 6 p.m.), or half-day (8 a.m. - 1 p.m. or Noon - 6 p.m.). This year, we need volunteers to help check-in racers, set-up and break down stations and the course, manage specific obstacles, distribute water, awards, t-shirts, and swag bags, and act as team leaders for various sections of the race and each day's activities.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course will be on the pavement of Third Avenue from 115th - 116th Streets and 116th - 117th Streets, and will include stops for challenging, fun, obstacles to keep racers smiling from start to finish.

Registration is required for all participants. The first 100 youth registrants will win a free t-shirt.

Racing will be held from 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. The Active Living Fair will take place from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Volunteers must wear sneakers that completely cover their feet. No sandals, crocs, heels, or dress shoes are permitted.

Volunteers will be provided with a t-shirt to wear for the day of the event, which is expected to be worn through the shift.

The Active Living Fair will be held from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m, and will include face painting, FDNY fire smoke house, Live Music, many East Harlem community-based organizations, arts & crafts, games, prizes and tons of fun.

TIPS

KID-FRIENDLY SUPERHERO OR SUPERHEROINE COSTUMES ARE ENCOURAGED!

There are a few simple rules:
1. It is mandatory that you end your race with a dance move.
2. Trying every obstacle will make you a super hero for the day.
3. Spectators are encouraged to cheer for all participants.
4. Keep the day positive. Teamwork and perseverance are more important than winning at this race.

YOUR DONATIONS

Volunteering for JungleGym 2017 Summer Series is free-of-charge. If you would like to make a donation, you may do so with your ticket, but it is not mandatory. Donations will cover the costs of bouncy houses, slides, permits, prizes and awards, chalk and other essential supplies, and staffing. Proceeds from Concrete Safaris' JungleGym 2017 will support free, active after school and summer programming for East Harlem children and youth.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

You must be at least 21-years of age to volunteer.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

You may take the 6 subway to 116th Street and walk to the event. There are free street parking and garages in the neighborhood, but Concrete Safaris cannot guarantee availability for either.

What can I bring into the event?

Concrete Safaris advises that volunteers bring as little as possible to the event. There is no on-site storage, and the safety and security of volunteer items cannot be guaranteed. A water bottle, layers of clothes appropriate for the weather, closed-toe shoes (no sandals, crocs, heels, or dress shoes permitted), and your smile and flexibility are essential. Please do not bring food or drinks with you to share at this event.

Will there be a required training for this event?

If you select the full-day volunteerism option, we will ask you to take on a leadership role. You may decline, of course. However, if you graciously agree, there will be a pre-event training. All half-day volunteers will be trained on the day of the event during orientation.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Email christopher@concretesafaris.org or call 646.869.1503.

What's the refund policy?

There are no refunds for donations.
