About this event
A Musical History of Freedom
We are excited to announce that The San Francisco African American Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with SFJazz, will host our 49th year of Juneteenth on June 17, 2022.
The San Francisco African American Chamber of Commerce (SFAACC) is one of California's most influential minority business organizations, representing and promoting African American business owners in San Francisco. Through advocacy and economic development, SFAACC is creating a firm financial base that supports the self-determination and survival of African American businesses.
SFJAZZ is a recognized international leader in jazz creation, presentation, and education. SFJAZZ explores the full spectrum of jazz—from the music's origins in the African American community to its diverse present-day expressions worldwide.
Republic Bank is the Civil Rights Movement Sponsor, and AT&T is the Unity Sponsor. In partnership, the festivities will start at The San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center (Green Room) at 5:00pm with a reception hosted by The Golden State Warriors and art Display of Nina Simone sponsored by Comcast. Dinner and celebration will convene at 6:00 pm. The event theme - A Musical History of Freedom, will focus on the musical history of Black Liberation in the United States.
Bay Area vocalist Kim Nalley "has pipes to burn and works the stage like she means it" (San Francisco Chronicle). A blues-loving jazz singer with a rich and evocative voice, Nalley honors the legacy of one of her most significant influences. This year, we partner with SF Jazz as we pay homage to the late great Nina Simone. Join us at the War Memorial The Herbst Theatre as we celebrate the legacy of singer, songwriter, and social activist Dr. Nina Simone.
On June 17, 2021, U.S. President Biden signed new legislation officially recognizing June 19 — or Juneteenth — as a U.S. federal holiday. According to Biden, "by making Juneteenth a federal holiday, all Americans can feel the power of this day and learn from our history — and celebrate progress and grapple with the distance we've come and the distance we have to travel."
