Friday, June 28

"Fine Art Photo-Synthesis + Inspired by Ansel."

by Bob Coates, Master Artist/Master Photographer & Panasonic Lumix Ambassador

Session 1 - Fine Art Photo-Synthesis

Taking your images to another level is one way to set yourself apart from other photographers. Bob has chosen to move his images to a more-painterly feel. He accomplishes this by fusing many images together utilizing a single subject blended together with many textures from nature, decaying made-made items and everyday items found through serendipity. The end result is an image that has depth and dimension and will often reveal different things no matter how many times it is viewed.

Coates originally designed this for fine art application but has found ways to bring the technique over into his commercial business. Join Bob as he shares many of the ways to accomplish the look and move it into your business. Setting yourself apart by creating imagery that is only available through you is a way to stay ahead of your competition… And bring some fun back to your photography business.

"Bob is a remarkable photographer - impeccable craft and exquisite artistry!" - Thom Rouse

Session 2 - Inspired by Ansel – Black and White Image Processing

Adams would be a fan of digital imaging as evidenced by his quote from his 1985 Autobiography – “If I could return in twenty years or so I would hope to see astounding interpretations of my most expressive images. It is true no one could print my negatives as I did, but they might well get more out of them by electronic means. Image quality is not the product of a machine, but of the person who directs the machine, and there are no limits to imagination and expression.”

We now have tools that allow almost infinite control of every tone in our images. Photoshop and NIK Color Efex and Silver Efex Pro 2 are three of Bob’s favorite software programs for turning pixels to black and white. New software from Skylum including Luminar and Tonality are useful as well. There are some new capture techniques to add depth to your images too. Join Bob as he shares many techniques to make your black and white prints sing.

About Bob Coates

About Bob Coates

Bob Coates, M.Photog.M.Artist.Cr.,CPP, EA-ASP

Coates started his official pro career in March of 1995 after picking up and putting down a camera for the previous Thirteen years. Based in the Caribbean for the beginning three years of business Bob concentrated on commercial photography. He was dragged kicking and screaming into the wedding side of the business and then embraced weddings. Upon his move to Sedona, Arizona to get out of the path of hurricanes, weddings were expanded and mixed with some commercial work. Coming full circle Bob is back to concentrating solely on commercial projects, chasing wildlife and creating an art décor line of images.

Articles for magazines and books authored by Bob are part of how he gives back to the photographic community. In addition, Bob has presented programs from Hawaii to the Caribbean including National platforms at Imaging USA and other venues. Judging local and International print competitions is another way Bob has shares his expertise in the industry.

A Panasonic Lumix Ambassador for the past five years Bob has had access to the latest Lumix cameras and lenses. Coates has found that the gear has made capturing wildlife images more attainable with a longer reach and lighter weight.

Bob has always believed in helping his local community using his photographic skills. Among fundraising projects a couple notable ones were a calendar based on the movie Calendar Girls that raised money and garnered lots of community awareness and National press for the Sedona Arts Center. He also photographed, designed, printed and sold a calendar titled ‘Flowers for Food’ for the Sedona Community Center raising over $15,000.

Bob currently lives and works from his residential studio in Sedona, AZ with his wife Holly.
