Event Details

Join SAAACAM on June 22nd from 10am-1pm at 430 North Cherry St, as we proudly display some of the works from this year’s Black History Conference.
Methods of Historical Research is a senior seminar course required of every History major at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Students spend the semester learning about the historian’s craft by doing it themselves. This semester, Dr. Philis Barragán Goetz taught a section of Methods in collaboration with the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum. Students chose from a list of topics related to Black history in Bexar County, focusing on the social, cultural, and political dimensions of African Americans’ experiences.
With a generous grant from Texas A&M-San Antonio’s President’s Office and funding and support from the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum, the Black History in San Antonio conference showcased the Methods students’ research.
The panels were as follows:

Building San Antonio’s Institutional Structures: Law Enforcement, Education, and Residential Segregation

        • George Washington Carver Elementary and Elizabeth Wrenn, Carver’s first teacher and subsequent principal, Mónica Palacios
        • African Americans’ relationship to the Police Department, Moriah Torres
