Description

Celebrate the heritage of the Rochester Subway, which opened in 1926 and shut down on June 30, 1956. See our progress to restore Rochester Subway Car 60, the sole survivor of the fleet.

The Rochester Subway served our city for many years before it shut down on June 30, 1956. While the tunnels were once an artery of our community, they are now sealed off, leaving many with questions about its history.

Built in the bed of the old Erie Canal stretching from Brighton through the city to Greece, the Rochester Subway opened for business in 1926. Thirty years later, the Subway was shut down facing the threat of highway construction. Shortly thereafter, Rochester Transit donated Car 60 to our museum. Not yet having a permanent home of our own, the historic trolley car was loaned out for exhibition. It was returned to us in 1998, in need of extensive restoration. Our volunteers are hard at work stabilizing and restoring this important historic artifact for future generations to enjoy.
