Selections from Jumpstart 2016 will be exhibited in The Galleries at Moore from November 12 – January 14.
Now in its 24th year, the annual Jumpstart Fashion Show always gets the fall season jumping with excitement at Moore College of Art & Design. In the past, Fashion Design students have been charged with conceptualizing, designing and constructing garments in three weeks on themes inspired by everything from ballet tutus to urban camouflage. This year, they will construct pieces by hand and machine inspired by fashions created by Hussein Chalayan, Iris van Herpen, Miuccia Prada, Sarah Burton, Chanel Nicholas Ghesquiére, Karl Lagerfeld, Martin Margiela and others whose work was exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's MANUS X MACHINA: Fashion in an Age of Technology.
“Is the handmade more valuable and the machine-made less so?” Andrew Bolton, head curator of the Met’s Costume Institute and curator of MANUS X MACHINA, says that “the mediator between the hand and the machine must be the heart.” Moore’s students traveled to New York City on the fifth day of fall classes to see the exhibition and it is that experience that is inspiring their Jumpstart 2016 fashions. Juniors and seniors’ garments will fill the runway and sophomores will design accessories that will be on display. The audience will see pieces created on 3D printers and laser cutters, while others may include feathers, flowers, leather, patchwork, scuba knit and neoprene, embroidery, lacework and more details.
THOUGHTS FROM KIMBERLY MCLINDEN '17, FASHION DESIGN MAJOR:
“The most inspiring and important thing I learned from the MANUS X MACHINA exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was the new perspective of fashion it showed me. Fashion is not just about the clothing that we wear, it is about delivering a concept, revealing innovation and showing the world the brilliant and creative mind that makes a great designer. After seeing this exhibit, I am pushing my Jumpstart design further. I want people to ask themselves the same question I asked myself when I saw MANUS X MACHINA; ‘How did she do that?’”
