Description
Though the trend is beginning to shift, when most people think of standards and sustainability, they think of LEED. It's inarguably the best established standard, but certainly not the only game in town! With our July forum our goal is to give an overview of four of the other options that are out there: Passive House, Enterprise Green Communities, National Green Building Standard, and Green Globes. We'll look at how they work and examine some case studies. It will be a great opportunity to learn about these other standards and the unique benefits they carry! We hope to see you there!

John Barrows, President, J. Barrows Inc. -- National Green Building Standard
President of J. Barrows Inc., a company focusing on high end custom homes. He is founder of P3 Builder Group, Inc which focuses on bringing cost effective energy efficient practices to the affordable housing market as well as Performance Path Solutions, LLC. He has built as well as verified both single and multifamily projects to the ICC-700 National Green Building Standard®. John is a nationally recognized author and speaker focusing on sustainable and high-performance construction and has participated in the development of several courses for NAHB.

Chad Riedy, Program Manager, Green Building Education at National Association of Home Builders -- National Green Building Standard
As the Program Manager for Green Building Education at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Chad is responsible for creating and providing educational content and information to NAHB, its members, affiliates and committees to better understand green and sustainable residential construction which includes the ICC-700 National Green Building Standard®. Before joining the NAHB, Chad worked for a local home builder in Maryland where he worked in land development handling the planning, permitting and construction process for the companies’ projects.

Paul Shafer, Senior Architect, Viridian Energy and Environmental -- Green Globes
Paul Shafer is a Senior Architect with Viridian Energy and Environmental (a Vidaris Inc. company). Viridian is a New York City based company with expertise including sustainable building consulting, energy modeling and analysis, building commissioning, building envelope design, and water-proofing consulting. Mr. Shafer is a Green Globes Assessor, a LEED AP and a Registered Architect in New York State. He has worked with over fifteen Green Globes teams to successfully attain Green Globes Certification for their projects. In addition, he has administered numerous LEED projects. Both Green Globes and LEED projects have included residential, laboratory, hospitality, healthcare and corporate office spaces. Project locations have ranged from rural through dense urban settings, and include projects in Italy, Abu Dhabi, England, and the Russian Republic. His experience provides a unique perspective for considering alternatives to LEED.

Ken Levenson, President, New York Passive House -- Passive House
Ken Levenson has been a registered architect in New York State since 1993. In 2011 Ken started 475 High Performance Building Supply, a company dedicated to helping transform green construction to high-performance building across the US. Ken is a Certified Passive House Designer, a founding board member of New York Passive House and an Affiliate Council Member of the International Passive House Association. Ken regularly lectures on the Passive House standard and building science.

Mary Tchamkina, Program Associate, Enterprise Community Partners -- Enterprise Green Communities
Mary Tchamkina is a Program Associate at Enterprise Community Partners, a national affordable housing finance organization, where she works on certifying NYC’s affordable housing projects under Enterprise Green Communities Criteria (EGCC). Since January 2011, NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) requires all affordable housing projects that receive HPD subsidy to certify under EGCC to ensure deeper affordability through lowered utility bills and healthier living environments. Before coming to Enterprise, Mary was an energy auditor with the Weatherization Assistance Program in Brooklyn.
