Jamaal May is the author Hum and The Big Book of Exit Strategies. His first collection received a Lannan Foundation Grant, American Library Association’s Notable Book Award, and was named a finalist for the Tufts Discovery Award and an NAACP Image Award. Jamaal’s other honors include a Spirit of Detroit Award, the Wood Prize from Poetry, an Indiana Review Prize, and fellowships from The Stadler Center, The Kenyon Review and the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Italy. Jamaal May’s poetry explores the tension between opposites to render a sonically rich argument for the interconnectivity of people, worlds, and ideas. He co-directs Organic Weapon Arts with Tarfia Faizullah.
Poet, editor, and educator Tarfia Faizullah received an MFA in poetry from Virginia Commonwealth University and is the author of Seam, which U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey calls “beautiful and necessary,” as well as Register of Eliminated Villages. Seam is the recipient of the 2015 Great Lake College Association New Writers Awards, the 2015 VIDA Award in Poetry and the 2015 Binghamton University Milton Kessler Poetry Book Award. Her poems appear in Poetry Magazine, Poetry Daily, Oxford American, Ploughshares, jubilat, Kenyon Review, New England Review and elsewhere. She co-directs the Organic Weapon Arts with Jamaal May, and lives in Detroit, MI.
Poetry Jam with Tang Sauce/Music by Tang Sauce and DJ Stealth
Tang was born and raised in Hartford, CT. He has been involved in the Hartford arts scene for years in productions like The Wiz, A Raisin In the Sun and Night Fall. He has hosted the Trinity International Hip Hop Festival, has his own pandora.com station and has been featured on the cover of CTNOW. Tang brings an old school Hip-Hop flow with a new school perspective, with which he spreads peace, love and positivity.
DJ Stealth-the DJ moniker of Asaad Jackson-began learning the craft at WQTQ 89.9 Qute FM. He approaches the art of DJ-ing the same way one would approach the playing of a conventional musical instrument.
