Event description

Description

Welcome to a new year of Lā Holoholo in 2018!

We created these family fishing days to enlist your help in removing predator fish from Heʻeia Fishpond. The predators we want removed are kaku (barracuda), papio, toau, and tilapia. Our ultimate goal is to bring down the predator fish population in the pond so the desireable herbivorous fish have a chance to survive and thrive.

In 2018, we will have 6 Lā Holoholo. Sign ups for Lā Holoholo will occur in 2 month increments. On May 30th at 4pm, we will release and fill spots for June 30th and July 21st fishing days. Please don't sign up for both days, just sign up for one. We are trying to share the love among many families who want to join us, so please don't be greedy. Don't be discouraged if you don't make it into one day, there will be more Lā Holoholo opportunities throughout the year.

Here are some answers to commonly asked questions:

1) Fee - The fee is $15 per pole. We do not provide any poles/bait/lures, you must provide your own. Only pole fishing is allowed. One person may bring more than one pole.

2) Fishing gear - Poles (with or without reels) are allowed. No other fishing equipment is allowed. No large nets or traps. This is reef fishing so plan accordingly. Red scoop nets for the kids and buckets are okay.

3) Location - The fishing will take place along Heʻeia Fishpond wall which extends about 3/4 mile out into the ocean. Fishing is allowed both in and out of the pond. Within the pond, only predators are allowed to be catch-and-keep; all others are catch-and-release. Fishing is also allowed outside the pond but State legal limits are enforced. You may walk on the reef outside the pond but must stay on the wall when fishing inside the pond.

4) Catch - Predator fish are the only fish allowed to be taken inside the pond, all other fish caught must be released back into the pond. Our pond predators are Papio, Barracuda, Toau, and Tilapia. Fishing is also allowed outside the pond and State legal limits will be enforced. Everyone must fill out catch report at the end of the day.

5) Additional Information - Upon payment, you will receive a small packet of information including driving directions to the fishpond, safety guidelines, and a child waiver.

6) Cancellations/Refunds - In the event of really bad weather, we may need to cancel. When we do, we will either reschedule the event or assign your tickets to future Lā Holoholo. But also be aware that some rain will not force us to cancel so please plan to attend unless you have received notice from us ahead of time of a cancellation. If you need to cancel your reservation, we will refund your payment 7 days or more before the event. We cannot refund your payment if you cancel in less than 7 days of the event.

Please call our office at 808-236-6178 or email admin@paepaeoheeia.org if you have further questions. Mahalo for signing up, we can't wait to see you at the fishpond this year!!
